What is SAIL?

  • SAIL is Affton School District's gifted program.  SAIL is an acronym that stands for Students in Affton Involved in Learning.   Students in SAIL work in the SAIL room for a minimum of 150 minutes per week.
  • How do students qualify for SAIL?
    • Students must score in the 95th percentile or higher on standardized and IQ tests.
    • Parents and teachers may refer children for SAIL screening.  Referral forms are available through the SAIL teacher.  Referrals should be completed and turned in by the end of February.   Testing is conducted in the spring.
  • Transfer Policy
    • Per Missouri's guidelines, which can be found at http://dese.mo.gov/sites/default/files/Program_ProceduresManual2014.pdf, our transfer policy is:
      • The student must previously have been placed in a gifted program in a Missouri school.
      • The gifted program must have been a general academic program.
      • The student meets or exceeds the selection criteria established by our district.
      • The student and parent agree to such placement.
  • What kind of work is done in SAIL?
    • Students work on a variety of challenging enrichment projects, including group simulations, independent studies, research projects, problem-solving, competitions, online projects, and experiments.
    • An important part of SAIL time is affective lessons, which allow students to learn about themselves as gifted people.  Gifted people have unique social and emotional needs, which will be addressed during SAIL time.
